Winter in Seattle

Although I’m writing this post only in February, the snow that we’ve had this winter actually happened in January. So you will see that the post date for this blog entry is marked as January.

The winter blast for Seattle happened on January 18th, 19th and 20th. Though at first I did not believe that we were actually going to have snow, we had enough to keep most people working from home or just enjoying the snow. I did both as Rory had time off work. So with Emma at home as daycare was running on strange hours and not willing to risk going over the 520 bridge to get there, I enjoyed some snow breaks with the family.

I am late to write this post, because on Sunday morning January 22nd, we headed for a 2 week vacation to Hawaii. That post will come shortly either tonight or in the next few days. For now, here are some snow pictures to enjoy.

First, Rory and Emma enjoyed a few sled rides on our street. Yep, it’s steep enough that you can have a good ride. Our neighbor kids had a great time throughout the days.

I made sure to bundle Emma while she was outside. It’s fun to remember how bundled up I was in a one piece snow jumpsuit while I played outside in the snow in Romania. I remember being outside from morning till night never tiring of the cold or things to do. We would ice skate, through snow balls at each other and just have some jolly great time with the snow. These memories are ones that I treasure the most and I hope Emma will create great ones of her own!

With the winter snow around the house, the new house colors don’t look too bad. It is growing on me with every season.

Seattle had a 3 day winter wonderland in January. “Snow, please come again next year!”

The Blinds are in

With a week into the new year, we’ve tossed the Christmas tree outside over the sliding door windows and installed some “privacy” blinds in our dinning room.

I have to tell you, that it has been since September that we’ve been on a stage with little privacy in our dining room. Our neighbor’s house is very close to ours and so we see directly from our dining room into their living room. Not that I mind that much as they are great people, but it is nice to have some privacy now and then.

So without further adieu, here’s our dining room with some privacy blinds.

And the nice thing about these blinds, as the window on the right shows, they can come down from the top. Thus, in the morning, we can have privacy and light at the same time. A win, win solution!

The last day of the year

This is not really a blog about the last day of the year. That is today and what I’m about to talk about happened yesterday. But I am naming it as such in case I do not blog again today…

Yesterday, Emma and I sent a wonderful morning and afternoon with my mother. Mom took a few pictures that I couldn’t resist posting. Here they are…

I still think that I’m tiny as I’ve attempted to ride Emma’s bicycle. Of course I’m deeply mistaken, but it sure is fun to be silly. Because of Emma, I find myself being silly a lot. In fact, I feel like one big silly person most of the days!

I love the picture below as Emma just woke up. She is really cuddly when she just wakes up. It is a wonderful moment for me.

Last night, Rory’s parents also came to visit us. As Ron is a photographer, he wanted to go take pictures at Gasworks Park. I was thrilled to have them come by as any excuse to go out and take photos is a great one! Below are what I’ve captured from our walk. Seattle is a spectacular place as the sun goes down!

We walked from the back of the park, Emma happily checking things out in the backpack. She simply loves it there!

As we reached the bottom of the hill, people were on top hanging around. One person was lying a kite. It was a great and windy day for it.

Carol, Ron, Rory and Emma advanced to the top of the hill. Everyone excited to see the exquisite view of the city from the top.

image

There are two benches on the hill which I’ve always thought of two lovers. They rest peacefully on the hill and look out towards the water. One can easily imagine one bench leaning in towards the other and kissing.

The Space Needle stood majestically high and proud. It is a magnificent building to see. Yet part of me was sad to see how lonely he was from other buildings.

The night was setting in though the next picture is hard to see and a little blurry, I just want to thank my parents in law for coming by and spending a great evening together.

The last day of the year is today. With it, I end this year’s blog posting being thankful for life. All the ups and downs of this year has made me a little wiser and a little better. My relationships with people, be it friends, family or co-workers, whether good or bad has made me who I am today. I know this life is a journey and we all have our paths to take and our stories to tell. I end this year with a great poem by Robert Frost that is truly an inspiration:

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to another,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-"
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

Happy New Year!

A Christmas Celebration

This Holiday season has turned out to be a great one. With Emma 21 months it has been a great age for Rory and I to observe how much of a little person she is. Though she didn’t quite get the whole unwrapping of presents concept, she did play with all the toys that she got. And she loved spending time with the family.

First, we spent Christmas Eve with my mother. There she had a great time playing the piano, eating great food and playing with the little baby doll she got from my mother.

Emma loved to play with my mom’s yarn. So the whole night we were busy picking up string after her.

Emma was really excited to play with the baby doll.

Mom made amazing food as always. One of the traditions in Romania is to eat cabbage rolls and eggplant paste. She made both of them. By the end of the meal, we were thoroughly stuffed!

At home, Rory’s parents got Emma a kitchen. It says that it takes about 2-3 hours to assemble it. They were not kidding. Rory started assembling it on Christmas Eve but then finished it completely today. It required a screw driver!

image

Emma also got a wood rocking horse. These were opened on Christmas Eve and waited for her till morning.

image

In the morning, Emma noticed the kitchen and spent a lot of time in it playing with the dishes and opening and closing all the doors. For all the baby friends out there, you are welcome at our place anytime to play with the kitchen!

We open most of the present on Christmas Day and as with any morning, we were up by 5:30am. So while still dark outside, we started opening presents!

Emma got a “never fall doll” which is a doll that my brother and I had when we were little. It was my brother’s doll but I remember wanting to pay with it all the time. He and I had a few fights over it. I couldn’t find exactly the one we had but I found a close match. I think someday when I go to Romania, I will look for the real thing!

Emma got three baby dolls this Christmas. I used to have a little baby doll when I was little and I loved him. His name was Flaviu. My father brought him home one day and he was very unusual because he had brown eyes. In Romania that was almost unheard of in a baby doll. Here of course that’s a different story. Furthermore, Emma’s eyes are blue so I now look for dolls with blue eyes. If anyone knows about dolls, then you’ll appreciate that the doll below is an “American Girl” doll. As I was shopping for presents for the family, I ran into an “American Doll” story at Alderwood Mall. The rest is history of course… but I will say this much. I texted my friend Bianca about the doll and she said Maria “Beware: Once you give one… IT WILL get very expensive. You also will get these thick amazing catalogs which of course wants them to get more and more…” I know that is so true. But I couldn’t help it. I have a baby girl after all, so I am going to spoil her plenty!

I was always worried that Rory’s hands might get cold. So I went to Archie McPhees and got him some handerpants and a potato gun for protection.

image

image

And Rory got us some angry birds.

image

Emma also got a house. So needless to say, we no longer have any walking space in our house!

image

On Christmas Day, Emma and her cousin William were all eyes on each other.

image

Emma got too many presents from his aunts and uncles. Besides playing with the many presents they both got, Emma and William had a great time with grandma Carol.

Here’s to a great 2011 year!
