One window done, two to go…

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Today I got home later than usual from work only to find Rory working feverously at the den-to-be. He had already cut the hole needed for the new window and was well on his way to get it finished by the time it got dark. And he did just so. It is now a little before 9:00am and he finished installing one window. Tomorrow another and if things go well on Thursday the last one. Once the windows are in, the walls can come up and soon the den will be shaping.

So without further adieu here are some photos of Rory hard labor today. The tall skinny window is the one he’s working on installing:

And the end result is a beautiful window!:

And of course, Teika was supervising to make sure everything is going well. And her surgery is healing quite nicely:

Greenwood car show

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

I love living in the city as in just a 10 minute bike ride we went to Greenwood’s Car Show event yesterday. The show happens once a year but this year it was extra special as our former neighbor Todd showed his “Mini Mac” car. It was the coolest car at the show and he knew it!

Kari, Michelle and Jacob were there supporting Todd. I think they were very happy for him, though Maeberry, the little puppy got all the attention once they showed up. A puppy and a baby are the surest way to absorb attention.

Kevin, Jesse and Laurie enjoyed the car show as well.

We moved on from Todd’s fabulous car to the rest of the unique and interesting cars on the street. They say that the car show stretched for one mile on Greenwood Ave. Here are some of my top highlights. For everything else, you can check my SmugMug’s Greenwood Car Show photo gallery.

^ This is the fasted electric car in the world.

^ A lot of batteries for one car…

The one below is one of my favorite cars. It’s bold color and funky shapes was very fun to photograph.

Visited by hundreds of people, the show was a great success!

Father’s Day at Lakebay

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Yesterday was father’s day. I called my father and wished him a happy day. Then later in the day, Rory and I drove to his parents to spend the afternoon there. There were a few of us and as always I was fascinated by Carol’s flowers. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of the great roses and the brilliant colors they had. Here are just a few:

Also, Sunny was a great sport and just sat there for me to take his pictures.

As the day progressed, the weather changed to vicious rain. But still it was a pleasant day.

The house was warm and comfortable though and everyone had a great time. While Ron was on the couch resting his leg.

And as the day winded down, Rory went on a little kayak adventure, the bees worked hard to collect the pollen, we walked around Carol’s amazing garden and just had a great time.

And finally, Chester joined us on the deck.

Moo, moo, moo… Happy Father’s day!

Teika and the garden

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Well it is time to remove the suit from Teika. After more than two months of wearing the suit she is now free of it. Though not 100% healed the wound is well on it’s way to be so in the next week or so. I am still monitoring her to make sure she does not lick the sensitive skin. The last thing I want is to have her open the wound by licking it.

But she is a happy dog!

As Teika is enjoying her freedom from the suit, strawberries and flowers are blooming around her.

Happy Father’s day to all the great father in this world!

Summer Solstice Parade

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

This year, like the past couple of years Rory and I went to see the Summer Solstice Parade in Freemont. But unlike previous years, I did not fight my way through the crowd to get that perfect shot. Instead, we went on top of the Aurora bridge and took a few shots:

The interesting thing about being on the bridge is that you get a very different perspective of the parade than when you are really close to it. And taking pictures of the people watching the parade is pretty interesting and sometimes, as in the picture below, you take a shot of that one person that has noticed you up on top of the bridge:

We did walk around in the crowd and everyone had a camera whether big or small documenting the event.

Along with the parade, on parallel streets were a lot of little tents selling everything from food to cloths to trinkets of every kind.

Music was playing everywhere and people were having a jolly good time celebrating the start of summer.

It is priceless to see the joy on kids as the are having a great, great time!

Joy was everywhere and the crowd was large.

Videos of the demolition

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

I thought it might be interesting to take some videos of the actual demolition process. It was loud, nosy and very dusty.

The Office is shaping up…

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Today we worked a lot. Not only Rory and I but our friends Jesse, Keith, Alex and Christine worked really hard to demolish 1/2 of our living room to prepare it for an office/den soon to be. But before we started the demolition, yesterday we spend a bit of time removing furniture and preparing the space. Here’s a before picture:

And this is after we remove the furniture:

We sealed off the space from the rest of the house in the hopes that no dust will spread elsewhere.

And then we went to town, dust, lath and plaster flying everywhere.

It was messy, dusty and a lot of work. But slowly we made progress.

And then Rory went up to the attic and we started again, with the lath, plaster and a lot of dust.

A little bit after noon we decided to take a break and have some lunch. We enjoyed the new patio by hanging out and relaxing.

Then work started again and Jesse lead it off by kicking the lath and plaster.

More mess was made of course and one by one our friends left. And in the end it was just Rory and I cleaning up the fine remains and going to the dump one last time.

Of course the mystery of the day was finding my sports sock in the pile of debris. How did it get there we shall never know. But it has helped to prove my theory that socks are cable of walking and they often wander away from the laundry area.

And so, we have ended our weekend and are now tired and in pain from the hard work. But we’ve got a lot accomplished and the office is truly starting to shape up.

Flowers

This summer our roses have been blooming full force. Here are a few of my favorite shots:

And though the strawberries are not ripe yet, they are coming out one by one.

Fireplace pit on the patio

Monday, June 1st, 2009

A few days ago, we decided to get a little fire pit for the patio. Rory assembled it and then we tried it out. It turned out that the wood we used was a bit wet and so we smoked out the neighborhood.

But a few days later, we had friends over for a BBQ and tried the fire pit again. This time with much more success.

Everyone was also having a lot of fun blowing bubbles.
