No break for the den…

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Though I have been slow at reporting our progress on the den, Rory has not been. He’s been working feverously on getting all the wiring, studs and insulation done so that our contractor Bert (who is amazing) can put up drywall. So the next few pictures show the progress from a few weeks ago to what we saw when we came home after work.

I left of the previous blog post with Rory and Jesse working on the studs. Well the den is now beautifully framed and we moved the furniture from the living room into the dining room so that there is a lot more space to do work. This of course, means some perfect photo opportunities:

Yes, the den is shaping up. But the pictures above are the state of the den on Sunday. Today it is:

There was so much excitement in our hearts when we saw the walls that Rory couldn’t help but do the chicken dance:

He is goofy indeed. But you have to understand, that not only are we getting the den, but Bert is doing the round ceiling for our living room. It’s something we would have been really sad to see it gone.

And to top it all off, Rory brought me flowers. They are gorgeous as it is our 9 year wedding anniversary.

A day that we’ll remember!

The den has walls…

What started as an empty space was filled up with walls in just three hours (and that included eating dinner). Thanks to Rory and his great friend Jesse. They worked really hard to make the sketch that Rory has mocked up a reality.

Of course, this work cannot be left to just two pictures. So here are a few more as Jess and Rory were hammering the final nails.

Fourth of July Celebration

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Yesterday was the 4th of July. As usual because we live so close to Gasworks park, we opted to stay home and invited a few friends over for BBQ and a relaxed time outside. The weather was spectacular. On Friday, Rory bought a smoker so that he would smoke ribs for the 4th of July. But before we did the ribs, he tested out the smoker with chicken.

Then on Friday, we put out the chairs on the deck, started the ribs in the Smoker and relaxed in the sun.

Friends arrived around 6ish and food was ready shortly after. We all enjoyed way to much to eat. There was only one child among us. His name is Jack and he’s almost 3 years old. It was amazing how much we were distracted by him and he was definitely the center of attention. At previous get together where there are no kids but there are dogs, they too take the center of attention. I remember clearly times when Jesse, Laurie, Rory and I would hang out and we would literally talk for our dogs. It’s really interesting to see how humans behave around kinds or dogs. But I diverge from the 4th of July event… As I was saying, a few friends came over and we had a fun time with a lot of food. Here are a few of the pictures.

To see all of the pictures from the celebration go to my SmugMug photo site.

Rory believes that a little Prosecco is the best drink to have with BBQ.

But as I mentioned, the star of the evening was Jack.

As the night came upon us, it was time to walk and see the fireworks. The streets were filled with people, sitting in chairs, sitting on the concrete, sitting anywhere they could and having a great time. It is one of my favorite days of the year as our neighborhood really comes to life.

Rory took a few pictures and this one is amazing. Little Jack is curiously looking ahead at the fireworks while his dad holds him proudly in his arms.

And the gang found a spot from which we enjoyed the great fireworks.

As I was sitting looking at the fireworks, in front of me I saw a cute couple that came with their bikes. This felt like a perfect photo opportunity

Third window in, a promise kept

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

True to his word, Rory finished installing three windows in three days. And they were all done after a full day of going to work. And he looked good while doing it!

Now we already had a large window which actually was decreased in size when we put in the new one. the reason for that is because we will be creating a closet for the room in this area. As we removed two closet spaces for the other windows, we still needed to have a storage area.

Second window in, one more to go

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

True to his word Rory did another window tonight. When I got home he was working on framing it. It is quite impressive that he finished yet another window in one day. Well really just a few hours after a full day of work. I love summers when the light outside is still bright until really late in the day.

In the case of this window, he had to frame in the existing window width wise and make it longer to match the one he installed yesterday:

While Rory was working away really hard, I was playing with Teika and enjoying the sun.

And in the end, the window was finished! Two down, one more to go…
